The Procession of Trumpets concert at the Ives Auditorium, Masonic Heritage Center, with Master of Ceremonies Tim Blotz, was a high success. An audience of over 250 seemed mesmerized with every tune that the ensemble played. From the opening fanfare to the premier of Eric Ewazen's Clarion Calls performed by guest soloists Ronald Romm and Charles Lazarus to the final piece, The Stars and Stripes Forever.
Congratulatory notes included "clean", "terrifically exciting", "stylistically nails-on", and 'fantastic variety"; "The group understood the music and played with phrase, dynamics, and style." Perhaps the most meaningful compliment came from composer Eric Ewazen: "My heartiest congratulations and thanks to each and every one of you for your truly exciting and brilliant concert this past Sunday, and your beautiful and riveting premiere performance of Clarion Calls. Each piece was so distinctive and so beautifully performed, highlighting the individual styles of the music so perfectly! (Plus it was so entertaining!!!)."

TCTE Music Director James Olcott lead the ensemble and guest artists Ronald and Aaron Romm, in what can only be called an absolutely outstanding performance. In a room with surprisingly good acoustics for brass, and a very discriminating audience (trumpets players from across the globe) the ensemble was met with a standing ovation at the end of the concert.
From the opening number, Signature Fanfare, which solicited verbal ooh's and ah's from the audience, color, control, style, ensemble cohesiveness, and musical understanding were clearly exhibited and warmly appreciated by the listeners.
One of the many highlights of the presentation was the performance of Clarion Calls for Two Trumpets and Trumpet Choir, written by Eric Ewazen for the TCTE in 2022. Featured soloists Ronald Romm and his son Aaron were brilliant in their execution of a very exciting work with a great deal of interplay between the the soloists and ths six-part ensemble, which was also brilliant in the piece's execution.

Hello Austin, MN - TCTE Concert June 28, 2023
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble performed in Austin, MN at a joint concert with the Austin Community Band. The concert was very well attended and the audience enjoyed an excellent performance by the Austin Community Band, who concluded their part with TCTE playing Bugler's Holiday with the band. The second half of the concert was all TCTE and included premier performances of Scottish Images and If Thou Be Near, a wonderful jazz solo in the Odd Couple, and concluding with the Stars and Stripes Forever.
TCTE - Central Park Rosemount, MN July 13, 2023
It was a perfect summer evening for a concert and Central Park in Rosemount was a perfect venue. It was the premiere of TCTE's newly acquired herald trumpets! They were featured in one of our pieces, "On the Map", composed by Joshua Hobbs and adapted by James Olcott. A herald trumpet is a fanfare trumpet and has the same range as a standard Bb trumpet, but with a long bell that can accommodate a ceremonial banner.
Vintage Band Festival, Northfield, MN - July 29, 2023
This was TCTE's fifth appearance at a Vintage Band Festival in Northfield, MN. It was a gorgeous day with a great crowd and an excellent performance by the group. From the opening tune, "Procession of the Nobles" to the conclusion with "Stars and Stripes Forever", at was an enjoyable musical experience for all.

The first of three 2023 planned concerts in collaboration with the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra was in Maple Grove and a marvelous success. The orchestra and the trumpet ensemble performances were met with enthusiastic applause by the near capacity crowd. The second concert at the Lake Harriet Bandshell was, unfortunately, cancelled due to weather. The third concert at the Como Lakeside Pavilion was greeted with standing ovations and a delighted audience. Thank you to the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra for the invitation to join them, and to our audience for such a warm welcome.

TCTE Concert in Anoka, MN
TCTE played on May 7, in the physically and acoustically beautiful sanctuary of the Zion Lutheran Church in Anoka. The 90+ members of the audience were, according to conductor James Olcott, treated to a concert that displayed an energy and focus that rose the general musical sense of the ensemble to an exceptional level.

TCTE Jazz Blows 'Em Away
TCTE Jazz played Christ Presbyterian Church in Edina, Minnesota on April 26. It was the featured musical entertainment for a lunch meeting. The group did a great job and the audience loved it. Excellent music and inspired solo's were abundant.
The Trumpet Ensemble’s spring concert series “Trumpet Signatures” will have it’s final concert on May 7, at Zion Lutheran Church in Anoka, MN. The two previous concerts in the series were at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, and the Masonic Center in St. Paul (see pictures below text).
The concerts have been well met by appreciating audiences in venues that showcased the spectacular sound of 24 trumpets and percussion. From the opening fanfare to the closing familiar Sousa march, the variety of music and the lavish sound has astounded and entertained.
If you were able to attend one of the concerts, thank you. If not, there’s one more before the TCTE plays by invitation at the International Trumpet Guild conference in Minneapolis June 1, and then begins it’s summer series of concerts (see the Calendar).

TCTE Final Concert of 2022 a Joyous Occasion
On December 20, 2022, at the Phipps Center for the Arts, Hudson, Wisconsin, the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble joined forces with organist Bill Chouinard and Master of Ceremonies Michael Barone to present holiday favorites with the power of brass and majesty of the Wurlitzer organ including: Christmas Medleys, Good King Wenceleslas, excerpts from the Nutcracker Suite, It is Well With My Soul, the Hallelujah Chorus, Sleigh Ride, Hava Nagila, Silent Night, and We Wish You A Merry Christmas. The festive musical performance to a full house, was enjoyed by the audience and the performers. A truly marvelous evening!
Annual Gramercy Christmas Concert, A Celebration for ALL!
The Gramercy Cooperative in Richfield, MN graciously provides the TCTE with a marvelous space in which to rehearse and TCTE director Jim Olcott resides at Gramercy as well. Sometimes we see people listening in the lobby outside our rehearsal space, or even peeking in. We really appreciate the favor and we think the residents like our musical cacophony. To officially thank Gramercy, beginning in 2015 and continuing through this year, minus a Covid cancellation, the TCTE has performed an Annual Christmas Concert for the Gramercy peoples. The concert is a mixture of some of our best concert pieces and seasonal celebration pieces. Attendance is always high and there are always snacks and eggnog after. Below are a few pictures from the 2022 performance and attendees.

The first concert of the 2022 Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble's (TCTE) performance season was Sunday, April 24 in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church in Rochester, MN. TCTE was invited to perform as part of the church’s ongoing series “A Festival of Music”. The 90 minute concert was met with a standing ovation from the 80-person audience. First Presbyterian organist and coordinator of the event John Stender wrote to thank us and say that “the response here has been and continues to be very enthusiastic and appreciative.”
Richfield Bandshell, Richfield, MN (July 12, 2022): An audience of around 35 spread out over a rather large lawn area, a capricious wind, a sudden thunderstorm, and airplanes overhead, led to one of the more unusual outdoor concerts in TCTE's history. The weather forecast warned of possible showers, but the concert began at 6:30 with reasonable skies. However, the sounds of the ensemble, occaisionally obscured by airplanes flying overhead, were soon joined by the rumble of thunder, and a downpour of rain 30 minutes later, which scattered the audience and brought a quick end to the concert. Until then, the audience had awarded the ensemble with enthusiastic applause.
Thompson Park Activity Center, West St. Paul (May 25, 2022): The one-hour program was played for an enthusiastic audience of about 50 and featured 14 pieces. Among the comments and accolades afforded the group after the concert, the most striking and meaningful one came from the venue's manager, who said that the concert went beyond being exciting, but reached "further inside here" as he pointed to his midriff in an emotional manner. That is a huge compliment, approaching the ultimate.

Vintage Band Festival 2022 - TCTE was invited once again to the Vintage Band Festival on July 30. Outdoor concerts are always at the mercy of the weather, but this day was delightful. The group played a marvelous concert, including the premiere of the Signature Fanfare, in front of a excellent crowd that was very appreciative.
In addition to the concert, TCTE player Ryan Stransky did a Historic Brass Society presentation, "Using the Baroque Trumpet as a Resource for Pedagogy in the Modern Trumpet Lesson".

Como 2022 - The TCTE performance at Como Park was hot ... 94 degrees and humid! But so was the group! Audience response at the Como Pavilion was very strong, with several pieces, including our heavier pieces, receiveing extended and sincere applause amidst the vocal bravos and a standing ovation. One TCTE player, Ron Chamberlain was sitting in the audience during the Light Cavalry Overture and wrote "It was a show stealer—thrillingly played and a show of brilliance and endurance. I was as blown away as the rest of the crowd."
“Triumphant Return” Concert
November 14th 2021 a huge success!
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble’s featured concert of 2021, the "Triumphant Return," at the Ives Auditorium in the Masonic Heritage Center in Bloomington, MN was a tremendous success. Our Master of Ceremonies, Tim Blotz did an outstanding job providing detail and introductions to the music. Full ensemble and smaller group pieces, along with Hava Nagila featuring Jim Olcott playing the solo, and trumpets playing the piccolo solo in "Stars and Stripes Forever" were thoroughly enjoyed by the audience of 150+. Comments included "WOW" (heard from the audience immediately after the opening fanfare), "You guys are so good", "What a great concert".
The recent Brass and Organ Holiday concert featuring the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble and organist Bill Chouinard
was December 20, 2021 at The Phipps Center for the Arts, in Hudson, WI.
It featured holiday favorites with the power of brass and the majesty of the Wurlitzer organ. A joyful concert that filled the center with holiday cheer with this unique combination of instruments playing music of the season.

TCTE’s Annual Christmas Concert
On December 16 the TCTE performed their Annual Christmas concert for the residents of Gramercy Park Cooperative in Richfield, MN. The residents allow us to rehearse in the Gramercy Room (large dining room) and this private concert is our way of saying thank you. The concert was very well attended and greatly enjoyed as a couple quotes illustrate:
Congratulations for an excellent, inspiring, never-to-be forgotten (not enough words to describe it) trumpet concert by the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble. We wanted you to know how much we enjoyed it. I (Velma) couldn’t help but sing along on Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s “Messiah”. I was thrilled with Jim’s solo, “Hava Nagila” It seemed to come from his heart and soul. It was awe inspiring.
The variety of numbers kept us eagerly waiting for each one. Our thanks to all the players for a wonderful evening of music for the Christmas season and beyond.

Nicely done last evening!! I really enjoyed the concert! I hadn't expected to hear "Procession" and you all nailed it with Bb and Eb trumpets, flugels, and piccolos sounding terrific!
During my career in music, my least favorite piece was the Colonel Bogey March. At my retirement party from the Baltimore Symphony, the library staff presented me with a reconstructed Col Bogey part that I had torn into 1000 pieces. But your version is the best I've ever heard. Your version of Hava Nagila is also the best I've heard!! I wish we would have had something like that in the Baltimore Symphony!
-Ed Hoffman (arranged the Procession of the Nobles, the Movie Medley,
and others for TCTE)-

The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble once again had the honor of participating in the Minnesota 9-11 Tribute at Minneapolis' Lake Harriet Band Shell. Numerous musical groups provided entertainment, including the 204th Army Band and the 9-11 Tribute Chorus. The Band and the Trumpet Ensemble combined forces for moving performances of "American Salute" and "America the Beautiful."
The most powerful portion of the evening was the flag ceremony and military color guard salute to those who lost their lives on 9-11 and in 2020-21, followed by "Taps." Fox 9 anchor Alix Kendall was Master of Ceremonies; she shared her poignant newsroom and personal experiences of 9-11. This was the 20th annual observation of the date.

TCTE Makes a Virtual Appearance at North Heights Church's
"Winter Kaleidoscope"
A small in-person audience and a large online audience enjoyed North Heights Lutheran Church's "Winter Kaleidoscope" on Friday, January 22nd. The Arden Hills worship center was the venue for a variety of musical entertainment by a number of performers, including the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble. The group, which has participated in person at two previous Kaleidoscopes, joined this time via recorded performances. Scott McCullough represented the ensemble and talked with leader Thom Hardwick about what the group has been doing and how they have fared during the pandemic. The audience was impressed by the performances of "Hava Nagila" and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness." The comment, "Wow! I don't know how you guys did that!" was representative. To watch the entire program - including a 30-minute pre-concert performance by The Boys From Wisconsin, click here.
It's Time for Another TCTE
Virtual Performance!
"Here's That Rainy Day" by Jimmy Van Heuson, arranged by James Olcott.
This gorgeous antiphonal piece was composed by Giovanni Gabrieli during the transition from the Renaissance to Baroque periods. Arranged by David Brown and edited by James Olcott for 12 trumpet parts, one can imagine the sound of the three separate choirs resounding from the stone walls of Venice's St. Marc's cathedral. Enjoy this intricate masterpiece, played with great skill by members of the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble.

CANCELED
Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the board of the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble has chosen to cancel its concert scheduled for this Sunday afternoon at St. Bernard’s Church in St. Paul. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but, considering that many in our audience – and, indeed, many of our members – are at a higher risk due to their age, this seemed the wisest decision.
There are currently no plans to reschedule the concert, but please check this website and/or our Facebook page for updates. Thank you very much for understanding. Our fans and our members are very important to us.

Perform on TV and Radio, Promoting "Hooray for Hollywood!"
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble has had three appearances on Twin Cities television and radio shows this week! (Follow the links for video and audio.) First was "Fox9 Morning Buzz" on Wednesday, November 13th. Then, WCCO-TV4's "Mid-Morning" was the spot on Thursday, November 14th. Both of the television gigs consisted of an interview with concert guest Marissa Benedict and TCTE Director James Olcott followed by an excerpt from the concert by Ms. Benedict, accompanied by a small contingent of ensemble members. [Photos in the Gallery] On Friday, November 15th, WCCO-AM 830 featured the ensemble in a segment by Laura Oates, who promomted the concert as "One Cool Thing" listeners can do over the weekend. We also got a shout out from John Birge on Classical MPR for his "Weekend Picks" and Steve Staruch will play a recording of our final number on the concert program, "His Honor," on his "Friday Favorites" show on Classical MPR. You'll have to work hard to miss the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble this week!
TCTE Makes an Impact in September
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble was pleased to return to the Minnesota Walk n' Roll to Cure Ataxia on September 7th. This year's fundraiser raised almost $80,000 to help find a cure for this a rare neurological disease. It is progressive - affecting a person's ability to walk, talk, and use fine motor skills.
The TCTE was honored to provide musical entertainment, kicking off the event, where hundreds of individuals walked and rolled around beautiful Wolfe Park in St. Louis Park.

On September 11th, the TCTE had the honor of returning - this time in partnership with the 204th Army Band of Vancouver, Washington and Fort Snelling - for Minnesota's annual 9-11 Tribute at Lake Harriet Band Shell. This year's Tribute included an opportunity to honor Minnesota's first responders. A moving flag ceremony, with members of the Trumpet Ensemble performing a special arrangements of "Taps," was a highlight of the event.
A Hot One in Northfield!
It was a sunny day at the Vintage Band Festival (VBF) in Northfield, Minnesota on August 3rd. The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble returned to Center Stage and performed a fun and varied concert, including wonderful solos by Dick Miller (playing Misty on flugelhorn) and TCTE director Jim Olcott for Portrait of a Trumpet. It was a warm, summer's day, but that didn't affect the enthusiasm of the huge crowd; they clearly enjoyed the show. One of the biggest hits of the day was The Colonel Bogey March, with whistling replaced by buzzing on mouthpieces!
The VBF is held every year for one day and every third year for four days. 2019 was one of the big years, and bands from all over the world came to perform on multiple stages around Northfield, playing baroque, mariachi, alphorn, New Orleans jazz, and other genres. They also continue the original inspiration for the Vintage Band Festival by featuring several Civil War re-creation bands.

Great Music in Wisconsin
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble held two collaborative concerts in Wisconsin on July 16th and 18th with the St. Croix Valley Community Band.
As with all of our collaborative concerts, each ensemble played its own selections, then teamed up for some powerful, combined numbers. The audiences in both River Falls and at St. Croix RiverFest in Hudson were appreciative, and the rainy weather cleared up just in time for both shows!

Summer Fete 2019 a Powerful Success!
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble joined Jerry Luckhardt and the Medalist Concert Band for an evening of music and fireworks at the Normandale Lake Band Shell on July 3rd. It was Bloomington's big summer celebration: Summer Fete! It's hard to know how big the crowd was, but estimates ran from 10,000 to 40,000!
Each ensemble performed their own selections, the Medalist Band playing some fine marches and show tunes. TCTE's segment featured the Star Wars March and a crowd-pleasing version of the Colonel Bogey March. The ensembles then joined forces for some powerful numbers: the Midwest premiere of Victory Fanfare by Benjamin Blasko, finishing with audience favorites America the Beautiful, and Sousa's The Stars and Stripes Forever. Topping off the evening was one of the best fireworks displays in Minnesota.

TCTE takes it On The Road!
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble has been "getting out of town" during May, June, and July to hold concerts in Sauk Rapids, Rochester, River Falls, Hudson, and Northfield. This is an opportunity for fans outside of the Twin Cities to hear the unique sound of the TCTE. And all of the concerts are free!
The shows feature new repertoire, including a Beatles Medley, the Colonel Bogey March (made famous in “The Bridge on the River Kwai”), and some newly-rediscovered British fanfares from early 20th century coronations and other festive occasions.

We’re delighted to be able to share the joy of great trumpet music with audiences outside of the Twin Cities! Please mark your calendar and join us. Details about all of these shows can be found on the Upcoming Performances page.
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble Has a New Logo!
The TCTE has a new logo, representing our ties to the past and our excitement about the future. The logo was designed by Bredon Patter of Puzzlebox Graphics and was born out of much discussion and numerous iterations. It represents the three primary instruments used in the ensemble: The B-flat trumpet, the flugelhorn, and the piccolo trumpet, arranged in a “trumpet bouquet.” While an attempt was made to depict each instrument accurately, it was also important to allow for energy, movement, excitement – even playfulness – to come through.
The color is brass – an obvious choice for an ensemble of brass instruments. The text portions of the logo, when used, convey the classical and regal history of the trumpet and its important place in many cultures.
Watch for the new logo on everything from uniform shirts and music stand banners to T-shirts and giveaway earplugs!

TCTE receives "Standing O" at MMEA Midwinter Clinic!
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble played for a very appreciative audience of music educators and students at the Minneapolis Convention Center on February 15th. In addition to playing TCTE favorites like Soundings and Bugler's Holiday, the TCTE wowed the crowd with the Triumphal March from "Aida" and excerpts from Carmina Burana. Attendee Jennifer VanReese, an instrumental and classroom music instructor, said, "I can honestly say that before today, I had never even imagined Carmina Burana performed by 24 trumpets. Now, I’m not sure how I ever lived without it!"
The Ensemble was one of 23 groups selected from a pool of nearly 60 to perform a concert at the prestigious Minnesota Music Educators Association Midwinter Clinic. “This is quite a feather in our cap,” said TCTE Director, Jim Olcott. “The Clinic is the premiere event for Minnesota music teachers each year, and it is fantastic exposure for us. It is a very discerning group, as you might imagine, so their opinion is very important.” In addition to a 45-minute concert in the afternoon, the TCTE also performed Dmitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture with The Medalist Concert Band as part of that group’s evening MMEA concert.

TCTE/Medalist Concert Band joint performance
a great success!
A good crowd braved the crazy Minnesota weather, and came out to Maplewood's Hill-Murray School on February 4th to hear a collaborative concert with the award-winning Medalist Concert Band, under the direction of Jerry Luckhardt, and the TCTE. The performance featured each group, individually, as well as in combination. The program kicked off with music from the Hill-Murray High School Band, a flute choir, and then the TCTE's "solo selection" which included such varied selections as the well-known Olympic Theme and Fanfare by John Williams and Leo Arnoud, TCTE Director Jim Olcott's arrangement of the beautiful American folk song, Shenandoah, and Carl Orff's remarkable Carmina Burana. Then the TCTE and MCB combined forces for Dmitri Shostakovich's powerful Festive Overture. After several excellent pieces by the Medalist Band, the concert concluded with the majestic America the Beautiful.
TCTE featured at "Winter Kaleidoscope" performance at Arden Hills' North Heights Lutheran Church
After its highly successful premiere performance at last year's event, the TCTE was invited back to one of its most-loved venues, North Heights Lutheran Church in Arden Hills, for it seasonal "Winter Kaleidoscope" on Friday,
January 18th.
This musical variety-show included various performing groups, from choirs and small vocal ensembles, to keyboard solos, the Celebrate! Conservatory Dancers, and congregational sing-alongs. The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble, 20 players strong, was featured in the program, playing some of its favorites, including the Olympic Fanfare and March (Williams/Arnoud), conductor James Olcott's arrangement of the beautiful tune Shenandoah, Leroy Anderson's Trumpeter's Lullaby featuring TCTEer Scott McCullough, Trumpets, a march by Olcott, and of course, David Hickman's classic arrangement for 12 trumpets of the perennial favorite, Bugler's Holiday. A beautiful new arrangement by Scott McCullough of It Is Well With My Soul was also premiered.

TCTE says "Thank You" with special Christmas concert
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble was pleased to present a Christmas concert to the residents of Gramercy Park Cooperative in Richfield, Minnesota on December 20th. TCTE rehearsals have been held in the meeting room of Gramercy Park almost since the Ensemble's inception, and annual Christmas concerts have been the TCTE's way of saying thanks. The performance included traditional carols - with the large audience singing along - and a medley of secular holiday songs. And there were plenty of TCTE favorites like "Bugler's Holiday." Director Jim Olcott (a resident of Gramercy) played the Sammy Nestico trumpet solo, "Portrait of a Trumpet." There was also a world premiere of Leroy Anderson's "The Typewriter," performed entirely on trumpets (no typewriter needed!). You'll have to see that one for yourself!
"24 Trumpets - Take 3!" takes Bloomington by storm!
The TCTE’s annual fall performance at the beautiful Ives Auditorium in Bloomington was a hit! The earplug giveaway available at both doors to the auditorium was a tongue-in-cheek reminder of what the audience was in for!
The full "24" kicked things off with the Olympic Theme and Fanfare by Leo Arnoud and John Williams. That left no doubt that the crowd was attending a trumpet performance!
Selections ranged from works by Gabrieli and Verdi to Nestico and Leroy Anderson. A set by TCTE Jazz gave a real change of pace. And back by popular demand was selections from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. The obligatory crowd-pleaser, Bugler's Holiday, was the topper to send the crowd home - happy. Among the comments from the audience: "Wow!" and "I had no idea!" (These from folks who have never attended a TCTE performance!)

TCTE/LWBB Concerts a "Spectacular" Success!
Combining their brass might, The Lake Wobegon Brass Band (LWBB) and the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble (TCTE), wowed appreciative crowds at four performances around the Twin Cities and in Stillwater at the end of September and the beginning of October. The series, appropriately named "A Brass Spectacular,” kicked off with Summon the Heroes, a piece composed by John Williams for the 1998 Atlanta Olympic Games, a suitable fanfare for such a concert. Sammy Nestico's Portrait of a Trumpet , featured TCTE soloist Neil Baumgartner III, and an exciting joint performance of Leroy Anderson’s Buglers’ Holiday were crowd pleasers. The LWBB, one of the premiere bands in the Midwest modeled on the special instrumentation and repertoire of the British Brass Band, asked the TCTE to collaborate on a series of concerts that gave each group an opportunity to show its strengths. Comments from audience members included "Phenomenal!" and "You guys get better every time we hear you!"
TCTE joins stirring 9-11 Tribute Concert
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble had the honor of participating in this year's Minnesota 9-11 Tribute Memorial Concert. The evening-long event was held at the Lake Harriet Bandshell and was very well-attended.
Several musical groups performed, including an All Volunteer Orchestra and All Volunteer Chorus. Cody Matz and Leah Beno of KMSP-Fox 9 served as Masters of Ceremonies.
One of the most moving parts of the event was the Color Guard entrance and salute, followed by an echo version of Taps, performed by two TCTE trumpeters.

TCTE plays for 2,100 at the North Heights
Freedom Celebration on June 30th and July 1st.
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble (TCTE) was honored to be asked to return to North Heights Lutheran Church for its Freedom Celebration, an annual Fourth of July observance. With two services this year, the total attending was nearly 1,700, with an additional 400 tuning in on-line. America's Christian and patriotic heritage were celebrated through music, video, and drama. The events included an emotional Parade of Honor, where veterans, service members, and first responders were recognized and honored. Special guest speaker Capt. Westby Anderson delivered the message.
The TCTE helped to set the mood, opening the service with a fanfare from the balcony and contributing its own selections ("Olympic Theme and Fanfare," "God Bless America," "America the Beautiful," and "My Country 'tis of Thee") to the abundance of patriotic music during the services.
Rainy weather forced Saturday evening's ice cream social and Sunday's picnic lunch indoors, but that didn't dampen spirit of the crowd. The Sunday lunch featured a "mini-concert" by the Trumpet Ensemble with Jim Olcott soloing on "Portrait of a Trumpet" and Neil Baumgartner featured on "Vergen de la Macarena."
Comments from the congregation were ebullient, with words like "wonderful" and "amazing" used frequently in describing the ensemble's performance.
The TCTE has already been asked to return for next year's Freedom Celebration. But first, the group will play for the Fall Kaleidoscope, an evening of worship and musical variety to be held on Friday, September 21st.

TCTE performs anthems for the Timberwolves
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble played two national anthems at Target Center on January 20th! For the second time, the TCTE was asked to play for a major Twin Cities sporting event. The red-hot Timberwolves took on the Toronto Raptors, so both "O Canada" and "The Star Spangled Banner" were on the playlist. And the Timberwolves won! Any connection?

Vax and the TCTE knock 'em over at Richfield Lutheran
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble (TCTE) returned to Richfield Lutheran Church on March 18 for a major performance with Stan Kenton Band alumnus Mike Vax as the featured guest artist.
Playing to one of the the group's largest audiences for a stand-alone concert, the ensemble opened the two-hour event with its signature fanfare Soundings and launched into a highly eclectic program that exhibited the continuing growth in the technical and musical prowess for which the group is becoming known. The program included works from classic orchestral literature (Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, the Triumphal March from Aida by Verdi, and six movements from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff).

Modern works included Fillmore's famous march, His Honor, the haunting Even When He is Silent, and a new work written especially for the TCTE, A Thousand Angry Bees.
One highlight among many was the appearance of jazz great Mike Vax, who was featured as soloist on Mendez' La Virgen de la Macarena and Sammy Nestico's Portrait of a Trumpet. Mike also performed with TCTE Jazz (six trumpets and rhythm section), wowing the audience with his renditions of I Remember Clifford, In a Mellow Tone, and Blues in Hoss' Flat.

Thanks to all who attended "24 Trumpets - Take 2"!
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble returned to the beautiful Ives Auditorium to play works from the Baroque to jazz for an appreciative audience. Opinions on the highlights of the evening varied between attendees, but selections from Karl Orff's "Carmina Burana" were among the most talked about pieces. The premiere of Mike Nelson's "A Thousand Angry Bees" was also a hit. And the jazz ensemble consisting of six trumpets and rhythm section appealed to the large contingent of jazz fans in the crowd. Director James Olcott and the TCTE wish to thank the Ives staff for their excellent support in the weeks leading up to the performance, as well as during the show, itself. Watch for announcements of next year's concert in the next few months, and be sure to keep an eye on the TCTE calendar of upcoming performances on this website.
TCTE shines at "Fall Kaleidoscope" Concert at NHLC
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble was a guest artist on Friday, September 22, at special praise concert organized and produced by the North Heights Lutheran Church (NHLC) in Arden Hills. Minnesota.
Performing in the church's beautiful and spacious sanctuary, the ensemble was able to showcase its might and its tenderness in front of a very appreciative audience of over 1000. Shared with the church's praise choir, a vocal duo, and a great deal of hymn singing, the trumpet ensemble performed several of its traditional pieces (Balmages' Soundings, it's patriotic medley (see the article below), and Even When He is Silent), and added to its repertoire Days of Elijah, arranged by TCTE's own Scott McCullough, and, along with the singing of the audience, a special version of Lead On, O King Eternal, complete with double descants raining down on the congregation from balconies on both sides of the 100-yard wide sanctuary.
Compliments and thank-you's were profuse and ebullient after the performance. Members of the audience, church musicians, members of the choir, and the pastor all spoke of being moved by the ensemble's performances, with no one piece being singled out. Director James Olcott expressed his delight and satisfaction with the response of the listeners, who gave the group a quick-up standing ovation after its performance of America the Beautiful. "The professionalism in the tonal and dynamic control in the interpretation of the pieces, both martial and intimate, is beginning to really come through," he said, "and that bodes really well for our concert next November."
The TCTE has already been approached about returning to the church for further performances. "I really hope that that works out," says Olcott. "In sight and sound, the church is a gorgeous venue in which to play."

Two outdoor performances highlight early September
The Second week of September was a busy one for the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble: two outdoor performances, one on September 9 for a fundraiser for the National Ataxia Foundation, the other on September 14 for the Minnesota Twins.
The first, called the “Minnesota Walk n’ Roll to Cure Ataxia,” was held at Wolfe Park in St. Louis Park, Minnesota and attended by over 300. The event raised over $115,000 for ataxia research.
An outdoor on-stage program of testimonials, talks about the disease, and raffle events was heralded by twenty members of the TCTE playing fanfares, a march, and several patriotic tunes, including Salute!, a medley of theme songs for the US armed forces, and the group’s arrangements of You’re a Grand Old Flag, and America the Beautiful.
The performance marked the third year of TCTE’s participation. ”I am delighted to do this,” says James Olcott, the ensemble’s director. “One of the goals of the TCTE is indeed outreach and support for community affairs,” noting that the group is likely to be involved again in 2018.
Just five days later, the TCTE was a featured ensemble at Target Field in Minneapolis in pre-game ceremonies for the baseball game between the Minnesota Twins and the Toronto Blue Jays. Standing at the far end of center field, the 24-member ensemble played the Canandian national anthem. Three microphones in front of the group sent the trumpets loud and clear through the stadium while television cameras showed the group on screens throughout the stadium, on thousands of tvs throughout the US and Canada, and on the gigantic JumboTron screen overlooking the stadium's left field. The performance was met with thunderous applause from the fans.
TCTE trumpeter Scott McCullough replied that this was clearly and obviously the largest audience the ensemble had ever played for, figuring in the multiple thousands. “Pretty exhilarating,” he said. The largest crowd prior to the game was 1,200 at North Heights Lutheran Church in Arden Hills, Minnesota last July 2. “Kinda tore that record up, didn’t it?” he smiled.

TCTE completes recordings for its first CD
The Ives Auditorium in Bloomington's Minnesota Masonic Heritage Center was the location of TCTE's day-long recording session on March 17, as it put the final five pieces "in the can" for the production of the group's as yet un-named first CD.
"We are really pleased with the results of today's work," said Olcott after the last take of A Thousand Angry Bees, a new work written for the ensemble by Minneapolis trombonist-composer Michael Nelson. "The group sounded great all day long, and I am confident that the CD will really be quite impressive." Other works on the CD, some recorded during the group's first such session in August of last year, will include Charamela Real No. 54 (an anonymous Baroque work for 24 players and timpani), the Grand March from Verdi's Aida, Olcott's transcriptions of America the Beautiful, Fillmore's His Honor, and Kim Arnesen's Even When He is Silent, a movement from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, and Brian Balmage's Soundings, the signature work for the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble. The CD is expected to be ready for dissemination and sale by the end of June. |
Recording session yields eight works for future CD
The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble (TCTE) held its first recording session on Saturday, August 19, and was able to finish eight pieces in a four-hour period.
Under the baton of director James Olcott, the 23 trumpet/two percussionist-strong ensemble recorded Brian Balmages' Soundings, its version of Carmon Dragon's America the Beautiful, David Turnbull's 20-trumpet transcription of the Triumphal March from Verdi's Aida, Olcott's arrangement of Kim Arneson's Even When He is Silent, Dave Hickman's transcription of Bugler's Holiday, Trumpets by Olcott, Arnold Bax's fanfare, Hosting at Dawn, and Diademata, from Olcott's Traditional Church Hymns and Descants.
"The day was a huge success," beamed Olcott afterwards. "The group sounded wonderful, and we were able to move from piece to piece with minimal numbers of takes."
The recording session was held at the Ives Auditorium at the Masonic Heritage Center in Bloomington, Minnesota and was the first to be held at that venue. The acoustics of the hall for recording were roundly praised by the recording team, itself highly lauded by Olcott and the ensemble, of Cara Thrane, the auditorium's sound technician, Brian Pekol, the Ives stage manager and assistant sound tech, and Ryan Olcott, a highly respected and well-known recording/sound engineer from the Twin Cities.
The recordings will be mastered and produced by Ryan Olcott, and is expected to be used as audition material. "The ultimate plan", says ensemble director Olcott, "is to have another recording session next March, at which time the current works will be combined with the pieces recorded at that time to create a CD that can be made available at performances by the TCTE."

TCTE featured at Vintage Band Festival
For the second year in a row, the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble was honored to be invited to the 2017 Vintage Band Festival, a one-day event held on Saturday, July 29 in Northfield, Minnesota.
Playing on the festival's portable stage at Northfield's Bridge Square and in front of an enthusiastic audience of over 300, the ensemble performed an eclectic concert of works that included, among others, classics (the Triumphal March from Verdi's Aida), marches (Fillmore's His Honor and director James Olcott's The Standard), patriotic music (Salute! A Medley of US Military Theme Songs and You're a Grand Old Flag), popular music (Bugler's Holiday), and jazz.
The trumpet ensemble was one of ten performing ensembles ranging in scope from the Historic Fort Snelling Fifes and Drums to the Bavarian Musikmeisters, the Sheldon Theater Brass Band and Copper Street Brass.
An important and traditional mainstay of Northfield's summer activities since 2006, the VBF hosts, along with its one-day events in interspersing years, a four day, 35-ensemble/multi-stage extravaganza every third year that attracts vintage and modern ensembles of all kinds from around the world. The next four-day event is planned for 2019.

Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble plays for largest audience yet at July 2nd "Freedom Celebration" pageant at North Heights Lutheran Church.
The TCTE had the honor of playing for the "Freedom Celebration" at the Arden Hills campus of North Heights Lutheran Church on July 2nd. An audience of almost 1,300 attended this year's patriotic pageant, where the TCTE was invited to be a special musical guest. The event, featured a flag processional, dance, and powerful vocal and instrumental music. Two selections, performed from the balcony at the rear of the sanctuary, added to the drama of the event. Following the service, the ensemble performed a short concert on the plaza, where an appreciative crowd enjoyed a picnic lunch.

A very busy week for TCTE: a TV appearance, a dedication ceremony, and a major concert.
THE TWIN CITIES TRUMPET ENSEMBLE continued during the week of June 19 to prove its own continued musical and professional growth via three back-to-back performances that highlighted diversity in repertoire and professional level performance.
"Tonight's concert was a musical highlight of our spring season," said director James Olcott after the group's formal concert at Normandale Community College on June 22. "Style, sound, and detailed musical conception, all took major steps. The hard work and concentration really has paid off. It was a grand performance."
Early morning: Starting off a two-day trio of performances, six members of the ensemble were feature on the television program, KARE 11 Sunrise Wednesday morning, June 21, complete with an interview with Olcott and the performance of Olcott's Wedding Fanfare Number 1.
Then, on the evening of that same day, the entire ensemble heralded the dedication ceremony for the Richfield Lake Amphitheater and Mosaic Mural in Richfield, performing several patriotic pieces, and closing the 20-minute ribbon-cutting ceremony with God Bless America.
On Thursday night, June 22, the group returned to Normandale Community College for its Third Annual Inaugural Concert, a major performance that featured a wide variety of works from classical to romantic to modern, and included a performance by the TCTE Jazz Ensemble. Selections included “Danse Bohéme” from Bizet’s Carmen, Verdi’s “Triumphal March” from Aida, and “The Great Gate of Kiev” by Mussorgsky.
