Christmas Carol Lyrics:

THE FIRST NOEL
1. The first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay:
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel Noel Noel Noel
Born is the King of Israel.
2. They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east beyond them far.
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel Noel Noel Noel
Born is the King of Israel.
DECK THE HALLS W/BOUGHS OF HOLLY
1. Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Tis' the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Troll the ancient Yuletide Carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
2. See the blazing Yule before us,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Strike the harp and join the chorus,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Follow me in merry measure
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
While I tell of Yuletide treasure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
O TANNENBAUM
1. O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree
Thy leaves are so unchanging
O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree
Thy leaves are so unchanging
Not only green when summer's here
But also when it's cold and drear
O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree
Thy leaves are so unchanging
2. O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree
Such pleasure do you bring me
O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree
Such pleasure do you bring me
For every year this Christmas tree
Brings to us such joy and glee
O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree
Such pleasure do you bring me
ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH
1. Angels We Have Heard On High,
Sweetly swinging o'er the plains.
And the mountains in reply,
Echoing their joyous strains:
Chorus:
Gloria In Excelsis Deo
Gloria In Excelsis Deo
2. Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
Say what may the tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?
(Chorus)
JOY TO THE WORLD
1. Joy to the world! The Lord is come.
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room.
And heaven and nature sing.
And heaven and nature sing.
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

2. Joy to the world! the Savior reigns.
Let men their songs employ.
While fields and floods
Rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
3. He rules the world with truth and grace.

And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders and wonders of His love.
O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM
1. O little town of Bethlehem,
how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
the silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
the everlasting light;
the hopes and fears of all the years
are met in thee tonight.
2. For Christ is born of Mary;
and, gathered all above,
while mortals sleep, the angels keep
their watch of wond'ring love.
O morning stars, together
proclaim the holy birth,
and praises sing to God the King,
and peace to men on earth.
SILENT NIGHT
1. Silent night, Holy night.
All is calm, all is bright
‘Round yon virgin, mother and child,
Holy infant, tender and mild.
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
2. Silent night, Holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth
Jesus, Lord at thy birth.

THE TWIN CITIES TRUMPET ENSEMBLE:
There is only one regularly performing 24-trumpet musical ensemble in the United States, and it has its home in the Twin Cities! The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble (TCTE) was founded in 2014 by a trio of trumpeters who invited others to join them for trumpet playing and camaraderie. It took only a few months for the group to grow to 24 of the best trumpet players in the area.
Under the direction of James Olcott and boasting a vast repertoire stretching from the Renaissance to the present, the TCTE has, since its inception, given over 90 live and virtual performances throughout the region and continues to be in demand in both solo and collaborative efforts with community and school music ensembles. For variety, the ensemble also boasts a jazz group of six trumpets, and is regularly augmented by timpani, a jazz rhythm section, and occasional low brass.
The ensemble released its first full-length CD, Soundings, in the fall of 2021.

James Olcott (Director):
James Olcott a native of Berkeley, California, is a 2013 retiree from Miami University (Ohio) where he was professor of trumpet for 35 years after memberships on the faculties of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Fort Hays State University (Kansas). While at Miami he was an active player throughout the region and around the country in both jazz and classical genres, including holding the position of principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra for nearly 25 years. Experience in that role also included the Tidewater Music Festival (Maryland), the Peter Britt Music Festival (Oregon), the International Festival at Round-Top, Texas, and others.
While earning his master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, he played with the Metropolitan Opera Company and other regional performing ensembles.
In the jazz idiom, Mr. Olcott has performed on San Francisco’s Broadway and with large and small groups in California, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and New York, and continues to perform in and around the Twin Cities region in Minnesota.
As a composer and arranger of music for trumpet ensemble, his works are performed worldwide and are published by Crown Music Press of Chicago, Tromba Publications of Denver, and his own publishing firm, Triplo Press, which he founded in 1991.
Mr. Olcott has been active with the International Trumpet Guild almost since its inception. He has held the offices of president, vice president, and secretary, and served on the ITG Board of Directors for 12 years, finishing his tenure in 2015. He was the coordinator for the guild's annual CD Project from 2003 to 2013, organizer of the Ellsworth-Smith Competition in 2008, and is currently a member of the ITG Journal Editorial Committee. He has been involved for many years with the ITG conference's Festival of Trumpets, during which time he has acted as participant, advisor, conductor, leader, and coordinator. PROGRAM:

Hilltop Fanfare
(2022) ... Mitchell Dietz

An original eight-part work for trumpet ensemble to start the concert in rousing fashion with rhythmic excitement and lots of energy. Written by one of TCTE's own trumpet players!

Guadalcanal March ... Richard Rodgers/Robert Russell Bennet;  transcribed by Michael Serber
A march written in 1954 for NBC's TV series Victory at Sea, played during archival footage of the celebrations for the victory of the famous World War II Battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific Ocean that lasted for six months.

Canzona septimi et octavi toni ... Giovanni Gabrieli (1557-1612);  transcribed by James Klages
A masterpiece from the Renaissance Era of Music straight from St. Marc's Cathedral in Venice. For three groups of four parts each. The work comes from a collection of 63 pieces for two or more instrumental ensembles playing at the same time from the rafters of one of Europe's most famous houses of worship.

Scottish Images (2022) ... Edward Hoffman
An original composition, this one inspired by a trip to central Scotland. Three sections make up the work, labeled "Robert the Bruce," "Loch Katrine," and "The Battle of Bannockburn."

Fantasia on the Dargason ... Gustav Holst (1874-1934);  Transcribed by Michael Serber
In the final and most well-known movement of his very popular 2nd Suite for Military Band, Holst takes a traditional Celtic tune called The Dargason, and cleverly combines it with the famous English tune, Greensleeves.

Beauty and the Beast (1991)... John Sherman Menken; Arranged by Michael Serber
When You Wish Upon a Star from Pinocchio (1940) ... Leigh Harline and Ned Washington; Arranged by James Olcott
Mary Poppins ... John Sherman Menken; Arranged by Michael Serber
In celebration of the 100th birthday of the Walt Disney Studios, we present a compendium some famous pieces to come out of three of his most famous full-length feature cartoons.

A Brief Adventure ... Wesley Nance;  Edited by James Olcott
An energic original work for trumpets. Fun to play and to listen to with all of its melodic contrasts and rhythmic interplay between different sections of the ensemble.

The Odd Couple ... Neal Hefti (1922-2008);  Adapted by Edward Hoffman
Light and fun, this theme song was from the popular mid-70's TV series of the same name. The tune, written by jazz composition master Neil Hefte became popular in its own right.

Battle Hymn of the Republic ... Setting by Peter J. Wilhousky;  Arranged by Michael Serber
Another standard of the literature because of its masterful use of fanfares, march rhythms and orchestral colors, this work has been arranged for almost every conceivable instrumental ensemble and choirs with instrumental accompaniment.

Bugler’s Holiday ... Leory Anderson;  Arranged by David Hickman
Probably the most well-known and loved trio for trumpets, Bugler's Holiday is both fun to play and listen to, and is a great way to finish a concert such a group as this. The arrangement contains twelve trumpet parts and is a stand-alone work, meaning that the accompaniment is within the ensemble. Listen closely to all of the interplay between the different parts!
